Dr. Essa Al Awad, MD, DCH, MSc, FABP, FSBP, FRCP (Edin), FRCPCH (UK )
Departmental Fellowship Program Director and Chair, Sonographic Clinical Assessment of the Newborn (SCAN) Training Program.

TRAINING

Dr. Al Awad obtained his undergraduate and postgraduate pediatric (MD) training from the University of Damascus Children's Hospital and subsequently completed fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is a fellow of the Arab Board of Pediatrics, Saudi Board of Pediatrics, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK). 

WORK

In 2011 he was appointed Medical Director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Peter Lougheed Center and in 2014, he was also appointed the Medical Director of the Pediatrics unit at the Peter Lougheed Hospital.

Dr. Al Awad is an executive member and the NICU and Pediatrics Education Medical Leader for UME & PGME at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. In addition, to providing excellent clinical care, he has a strong passion for the enhancement of education in the Calgary Zone. He started and continues to lead an excellent education program at the Peter Lougheed center and continues to provide education to fellows, residents, clerks, and Clinical Assistants and has received many awards of excellence for his teaching.

RESEARCH & QI

Dr. Al Awad main research interests include neonatal health outcomes, neonatal hemodynamic studies, and point of care application of ultrasonography in neonatal intensive care.
